Doctor’s Visit

My friend and I roamed the narrow streets of Chinatown and skirted past crowded rows of noodle stands and massage shops. One unexpected turn, and we stumbled upon Doyer Street, a cobble stone alleyway tucked away from street vendors and downtown traffic. There were few active stores – or people – in sight, only a poppy red sign on an abandoned eatery reading “Gold Flower Restaurant.” That was it, the front we were looking for, and we decided to scope it out.

Columbia Corner: Where’s the Fire? Smoke Jazz Club.

Smoke-front-door_2While I’m familiar with the names John Coltrane and Django Reinhardt, and could hum along to “The Girl from Ipanema”, for me, wisdom quickly yields to appreciation when it comes to jazz. Maybe I don’t know who was roarin’ in the 20s and that the A Train is more than just a mode of transport to SoHo, but be it bebop or Bossa nova, funk or fusion,  I can’t resist the urge to snap my fingers to a beat when it just feels right.
