Partying GUMBO Style

Last Friday night, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I headed to my very first GUMBO NYC party.  The original Gumbo party began two years ago in August 2009 at Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo, Brooklyn, an area that needed a boost in the nightlife scene (Gay+Dumbo=GUMBO, get it?).  The purpose was not only to bring this boost in nightlife, but also to create a safe space for the LGBT community to have a good time.

The party was initially held regularly on the first Friday of every month, and fans grew, coming from all parts of NYC. After seeing such a positive response to the party in Brooklyn, it was time to expand their arena to Manhattan.  In searching for locations in Manhattan, the goal was to find places that are fun and different.  Thus, their Wednesday of the month party, called GEKKO in FiDi (Financial District) at Library Bar in the Thompson Hotel, and their newest party BILLY at Counting Room were born.  From swanky to low-key locales, GUMBO covers all of the bases.
