The Joyce Theater’s neon marquee hovered brightly above the otherwise unremarkable corner of 19th street and 8th avenue; it was loud, incongruous, and impossible to miss at 7:30 pm on a cold Thursday night. Despite the chilling conditions, to the average off-Broadway theatergoer, it was a warm and welcoming sight.
