Sound of Summer

Inside New York‘s Tom Taylor visits Moma’s SummerGarden series:

It could hardly have been a more spectacular setting. As dusk settled on a warm Sunday night, a rose-glow covered the huge windows into the heart of the MoMA while swallows dipped and dived, merrily chirping to one another. Their chattering was echoed by the busy sounds of the street. Together, this unorthodox aural backdrop might, if you closed your eyes for a moment, conjure up images of a great orchestra warming-up.

The Big Screen With Bijan: MoMA

You can’t truly study modern art without studying film, and The Museum of Modern Art certainly leaves a significant amount of space for movies on the syllabus.  Unknown to most tourists, and even some New Yorkers, the museum hosts 3 full size movie theaters. These include the underground ”Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters” (also known as Theaters 1 and 2), as well as “The Celeste Bartos Theater” (also known as Theater 3), which can be accessed from the 54th Street entrance, between 5th and 6th. Movie tickets are complementary with museum admission, however, they can also be purchased separately. This makes the venue great for day trips, matinees, or simply dinner and a movie.

Cindy Sherman at the MOMA: A Retrospective

Cindy Sherman at the MOMA

Let me start this review by saying: I saw Marc Jacobs at this show! Right? How cool am I? He was awesome, wearing a skirt and a lacy blazer. I heard him say that the “Untitled Film Stills” were his favorite. Ok, enough about my fabulous goings-on-about-town and on to the Cindy Sherman retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. Through June 11, you can see some of the funniest, sexiest, most provocative, and sometimes downright disturbing art, all in one exhibit. This show kept me on my toes through its sheer emotional variety. Read the complete post »

“I feel like we’re yuppies,” I said, pointing out the pencil skirts and linen blazers in the crowd already gathered in MoMA’s sculpture garden for the museum’s weekly Thursday night concert.

“Yuppies? It’s free,” my friend responded, pointing to retired couples in jeans and students in sundresses. “Everyone’s here.”

And everyone was there. Word has certainly gotten out about MoMA Thursday Nights, a summer program combining modern art with music. The museum will stay open until 8:45 p.m. every Thursday this July and August while a diverse lineup of musicians performs live in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. In July, MoMA Music featured performers from Brazil, in conjunction with the film exhibition Premiere Brazil 2009. In August, the music’s origin will switch to China to suit the exhibition Project 90: Song Dong, an installation appropriately visible from the Sculpture Garden. Musicians perform two sets, one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m.
