Metropolitan Opera’s Young Associates Preview Party

Last week, The Metropolitan Opera’s Young Associates group welcomed the upcoming opera season with a swanky party held on the terrace of the Met.  Twenty somethings dressed to impress crowded the inner and outer terrace, sipping on unlimited champagne, and tasty bites like miniature pesto goat cheese sandwiches (with the crusts cut off!). Inside New York met an impressive variety of guests, from opera fanatics to those who purchased a ticket to the party from a Gilt deal.

While the cocktails and hor d’oeuvres were certainly perks of the night, the true highlight was the performance given by two young opera stars. No opera glasses necessary: we were up close and personal with the singers as they belted beautiful arias alongside a piano accompanist.

For two hours, the Met felt more like a chic lounge than the epicenter of NYC Opera culture.  INY had a fabulous time and cannot recommend the Met’s YA program enough!

Check out highlights from the event below:

Occupy Valhalla

This fate could have been avoided if Brunnhilde had a sassy gay friend

One of the more unusual adventures available in New York at the moment is the opera Götterdämmerung, or Twilight of the Gods. Picking up where the previous installation, Siegfried, left off in composer Richard Wagner’s epic four-part Ring Cycle, we find our favorite and previously eponymous hero and his lover Brünnhilde falling prey to the machinations of the evil half-dwarf Hagen, who, under the influence of his father Alberich, seeks to reclaim the all-powerful but cursed gold ring that the Norse gods stole from his family. The background story that sets the stage for Götterdämmerung is intimidatingly complex, but Wagner takes time in six hour opera to introduce the characters, their histories, and their motives. A Night at the Opera, On a Budget

While many college students are content spending their weekends surrounded by cheap beer and blaring music, I opted for a slightly classier Metropolitan Operaevening last weekend. At 7 o’clock sharp on Saturday night, I found myself waiting in line at the box office of the New York City Opera. For only $12—the same price as a movie ticket here in Manhattan—I purchased myself a seat to Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

The Metropolitan Opera House is nothing if not glamorous—filled with art enthusiasts dressed to the nines, the carpets and and golden accents do not disappoint. While awaiting the performance, patrons perused photography exhibits from various rising artists to entertain themselves. Although we had to trek all the way to the top of the house for our seats, our vast view of the stage remained unblocked, even if the details of the singers’ faces weren’t quite discernible without binoculars. But for $12, I certainly wasn’t complaining.
