After being named dropped on Sex in the City and Lazy Sunday, New Yorkers have come to associate Magnolia Bakery primarily with cupcakes. However, after a recent visit to their Upper West Side bakery, I learned that Magnolia’s offers over 120 varieties of dessert, and likes to keep their sugar arsenal in constant rotation to keep frequent visitors intrigued. The staff urged me to look beyond the cupcake to the many confections this full-service bakery has to offer, and after tasting an array of holiday desserts I would advise anyone to do the same.

Whether serious or silly, New York is full of food feuds. But when every other establishment claims to make the best burger, cupcake, shsh-kabob, or what-have-you, how do you know which titles should be taken seriously? Every other Wednesday, Cathy and Roger Li examine these claims of grandeur and decide who really does it best. This week, they take on two bakeries famous for their Whoopie Pies.
Move over macarons, the whoopie pie is quickly becoming New York’s latest dessert obsession. A cross between a cake and a cookie,
the whoopie pie covers the best of both worlds. Two bakeries, Joyce Bakeshop in Brooklyn and Magnolia Bakery in Manhattan, are favorites for whoopie pie connoisseurs. Both sweet shops have tasty whoopie pies, but which one takes the cake (or rather, pie)?
