This past week, College Fashionista hosted a Rebecca Minkoff Holiday Pop-Up Shop/ Showroom with exclusive discounts for college students. Rebecca Minkoff herself, along with Amy Levin, founder of College Fashionista were present at the event and dressed to impress at the festively decorated showroom located off of swanky Fifth Avenue. Both fashion icons shared their expertise about the world of high fashion, and Rebecca introduced a few sparkling accessories and the season’s most stylish outfits that are now on sale just in time for all those upcoming holiday parties.

After strolling through Lincoln Plaza all lit up this past Thursday evening, I walked into the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center (AKA the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts) to check out the “Martha Swope: In Rehearsal” exhibit currently on display. Swope is considered “the pre-eminent photographer of [New York] theater and dance from 1957 to her retirement in 1994.”# NYPL was lucky to acquire her archive in 2010, which consists of a whopping “1,520,000 images on contact sheets and corresponding negatives, 152,000 slides and 12,000 prints.”

A Jill Stuart model has her makeup touched up
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York is one of the most influential moments in the sartorial year, and at first glance it seems to be all about the clothes. While the designers who show at the weeklong festival of all things fashion certainly have a say in what colors, cuts, and styles end up on the runway (and in our closets), it’s the makeup artists and hairstylists that set trends that end up powdered, brushed, and braided on our faces and heads.
Backstage at the Jill Stuart show on September 8th, INY got a chance to talk to makeup artist Diane Kendal and hairstylist Odile Gilbert about the signature look for the Spring 2013 collection.

INY’s Amy chats with Tim Gunn
2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is finally here; fashionistas and the hottest designers are gathered together here in New York City. On Wednesday, September 5, 2012, the stars of Project Runway came out for the Season 10 “Wrap Party” hosted by Lord & Taylor.
Tim Gunn, Coco Rocha, and many more past and present Project Runway designers and stars came to Lord & Taylor on Fifth Avenue to celebrate the conclusion of another successful season.
Project Runway wouldn’t be where it is today without Tim Gunn. As he made his entrance to the red carpet, he was celebrated with montage of flashes from the cameras and press eagerly waiting with questions. Inside New York had a quick chat with a few of Project Runway’s fashion gurus:
INY: What do you see for in Project Runway‘s future?
Tim Gunn: I hope we have ten more seasons!
INY: How?
Gunn: Well, I taught for 29 years. Every semester I have whole new group of students and they all had different DNA, they had different chemistry among themselves, their work was always different, it was never even remotely similar. I feel the same way about Project Runway. Every season new designers, new DNA, new outcomes! It’s exciting.
INY: What fashion week runway show are you looking forward to the most?
Coca Rocha: Oh, that’s a hard question. I always love seeing Zac Posen be part of his collection and McQueen, Givenchy, They always have amazing concepts. Helmut Lang. It is very hard to choose. I can’t say one. I do have great relationship with Gaultier and Zac Posen as a model and as a friend so I always have to say them.
INY: What’s the Fall 2012 must have fashion item?
Mila Hermanovski, Mila’s Leggings.
INY: How do you see your life differently from when you were on the show and now? Any advice for the future contestants?
Hermanovski: Well, first of all. It changed your life forever. You get recognized when you go out and people always want to know what you are going to do next. And that’s also important and you are always going to be in the lime light with your collection. However it’s almost important, you must know your phones not going to ring the day after the show with buyers wanting to buy your stuff. It’s still a serious business. You have to hustle just as hard as everyone else to make it. It’s a big misconception. Your life changes because you are in public eye but it’s still hard work.
Other stars like Carrie Keagan, Tiki Barber, Korto Momolu, Eric Westpast, LaShwan Merrit, Phillip Bloch, Fran Drescher, Yaya DaCosta, and Bonnie Brooks, the president of Lord & Taylor added to the night’s excitement.

Fluorescents are aggressively, electrifyingly stating their presence on NYC streets this summer. They pop; they’re a highly visible trend. But fashion sometimes functions like physics: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You don’t have to know much about Newton to see that, though some of us are decking ourselves out like neon casino signs, there is also a more subtle, graceful movement towards neutrals.
This isn’t the beige of Upper East Side luncheoning, gala-ing, Cindy Sherman victims looking for their next botox fix; rather, we’re seeing young, hip, fun sartorialists building a standout outfit from a simple color palette.

With the Whitney’s Yayoi Kusama posters all over the subway, riders are picking up on polka dots and pops of color. Nadine, a student at LIM, does it with a tightly-packed pattern that stretches tightly over the bodice and flounces playfully at the waist, reflecting Kusama’s fluid, playfully contrasting dots. And the neon shoes also evoke Kusama’s affinity for punches of powerful color.
But Nadine isn’t purposely paying homage to Kusama’s work. The style has just worked its way into New York City streets this summer. Bill Cunningham has documented dots, and hot pink heels and flats are lighting up grimy sidewalks and neutral outfits all over the city. Pop on a pair and check out Kusama at the Whitney, showing until September 30th.

Following his own advice, Kyle in all black and high heels
Kyle Farmery is someone you look up to. After all, he rocks heels – and pumps, and wedges, and stilettos – on a daily basis. He stands tall at 6’0’’ and wears a lip gloss brand called “Sexy MotherPucker.” In contrast, I barely make 5’1’’. Normally I wear jeans and so-called ironic tee-shirts. I Google-search ways to make my eyes look smoky using inexpensive drugstore products. Kyle, on the other hand, strikes me as the epitome of fashion savvy. At times, it seems truly inhuman. I’ve spent many an evening clicking away through Kyle’s Facebook photos, mouth agape at his personal shots beside Lady Gaga, Betsey Johnson, photographer David LaChapelle, and journalist/personality Amanda Lepore. I recall one picture where Kyle looks fierce in fishnets, and suddenly it dawns on me: this mystique – this enigmatic quality about him; the awe that surrounds him – fashion is a commitment, and it is a way of life.

Nestled in a quiet brick building on 53rd Street between 8th and 9th, sits first-rate salon. For the fashion savvy, Timothy John’s Salon is a necessary stop for the latest in hair styles. On a rainy autumn afternoon, Inside New York stepped into the bustling salon. Inside, clients of all ages were being combed, coifed, and Keratin-ed by John and his four expert stylists who have been trained by Redkin Academy, as well as under John for several years. Tory Burch platforms, Haviana flip flops, and Converse high tops were visible under client’s black robes, proving the diversity of styles that Timothy John’s clients adhere to. From those who can afford a much pricier ‘do to those who save up for expert styling at Timothy John’s, the comfortable and trendy salon caters to all.
John opened this salon ten years ago and has since called actors and celebrities like Sean Hayes and Carey Mulligan his clients. He serves the local acting community and helps make locals look great for headshots and auditions. John has also worked for various television, film, and Broadway productions, including Robert DeNiro’s The Good Shepard. Despite his wonderfully high level of accomplishments, his salon is unassuming. With hardwood floors and exposed bricks, the ambiance is warm and welcoming. Stylists chat with new and old clients alike. Several women and men came through for their regular cut and gossip session. “I have so much to tell you,” loyal ladies exclaimed as they hugged their stylists and sat down to be pampered and chatted.
John explains, “It’s a comfortable salon where people can come in, see a smile, and get an excellent service done. It has a homey feel! Midwestern feel.” Inside New York certainly felt right at home in the afternoon we dared to change our cuts and colors!
