Last Friday night, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I headed to my very first GUMBO NYC party. The original Gumbo party began two years ago in August 2009 at Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo, Brooklyn, an area that needed a boost in the nightlife scene (Gay+Dumbo=GUMBO, get it?). The purpose was not only to bring this boost in nightlife, but also to create a safe space for the LGBT community to have a good time.
The party was initially held regularly on the first Friday of every month, and fans grew, coming from all parts of NYC. After seeing such a positive response to the party in Brooklyn, it was time to expand their arena to Manhattan. In searching for locations in Manhattan, the goal was to find places that are fun and different. Thus, their Wednesday of the month party, called GEKKO in FiDi (Financial District) at Library Bar in the Thompson Hotel, and their newest party BILLY at Counting Room were born. From swanky to low-key locales, GUMBO covers all of the bases.

With brick walls, rod-iron chandeliers, black Damask curtains and flickering candles at each table, reBar is the perfect setting for a romantic date – and the food, which tastes every bit as exquisite as it looks, is sure to impress.
To start off your night, you might want to start by ordering a glass of the sparkling Spanish Pinot Noire – the Ayinyo Cava Brut – which is not only a delicious, dry sparkling red wine on its own, but also goes wonderfully with the black olive artisanal bread served as an amuse-bouche. Be careful not to eat too much bread, though: you’ll want to save room for all the wonderful food that waits.

Walking into the Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo, Brooklyn, for the Saturday night Floating Kabarette, I was transported into another world: a world of feathers, fire, and silk. The bright red curtains, dim lighting and pond of floating candles that I walked over to get to my seat were nothing in comparison to the night of aerialist acts, burlesque, cabaret and other songs and dances that awaited me.

Hidden on a dark, cobblestone street amongst its navy yard neighbor, Vinegar Hill House only became visible when its soft interior glow began emanating into the street. Our curiosity grew when we slid through a group of giggling seemingly satiated diners. Despite our desolate walk through industrial Dumbo, the trek was well worth it. The moment we entered into the blushing hearth, we felt comfortable cozying up to the young bohemians and older regulars from down-the-block. At 9pm on a Thursday night, the tables and the copper-topped bar were crowded with cool clientele.
Hanging out by the bar to wait for a table proved to be no second-rate experience—it was a tight fit, but dancing around the attractive servers was part of the fun. Those who get claustrophobic easily might find this feature unattractive, thankfully downstairs dining, and a large warm-weather patio offer more space. Content at the bar, we perused at leisure the list of libations. Old standards (Old Overholt, Plymouth gin, etc.), as well as some unusual and well-chosen liquors were present.
