Even for a Wednesday happy hour, Bourgeois Pig owner Sean stands outside his bar greeting guests and checking ID’s — an immediate indication this is no Amsterdam dive. The Bourgeois Pig relishes in all self-aware excess, toeing the line between so-gaudy-its-classy and just-plain over-the-top. Of course it’s name adds a necessary degree of perspective, referencing and performing itself as an outdated Marxist stereotype. But while the elaborate antler chandelier and ornately decorated mismatched chairs, fleurs de lis galore, antiquated teapots, gilded mirrors contribute to a charming if slightly overwhelming ambience, the attention to tiny, elaborate details of taste does make for one heck of a good cocktail.
