“I always think of food – food is my life,” Chef Robert Sckalor says passionately, before I even have a chance to meet him. We’re planning a lunch over the phone. He urges me to come in on a Friday afternoon to try the Po Boy Sandwich, one of 200 sandwiches he makes as the chef for Battery Place Market, a stop-and-go quick market located on the corner of Battery Place and 3rd Place (tucked away on West Street).
Battery Park seems to have it all – the beautiful location, the proximity of a downtown scene, and, to fulfill all of the resident’s and lunchtime commuter’s eatery desires, Battery Place Market. Or rather, Chef Sckalor. “You know how to treat us well,” one of his regulars says as I claim a chair in the sitting area along the back that provides views of West Street. It’s not the largest sitting area – the chairs are too high for any children, the bar is almost too small to fit my HP computer, – but it’s suitable for enjoying a lunch break or revitalizing after a long day.
