A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Gay Version)
Laugh out loud at the Cell and the Hive Theatre. This riff on the well-known play challenges marriage inequality (which is no longer in NYC ) and portrays Shakespeare’s work in a very unique and powerful way. Watch Shakespeare’s words tell the never-before heard tale of lesbian lovers, Hermia and Lysander, and gay couple, Demetrius and Helena.  Director Matt Gregory said to the Wall Street Journal, “It’s true in heterosexual and homosexual relationships–’The course of true love never did run smooth.’” (Act I, Scene I).

Big Apple ‘Cue: Worth the Queue

There is something primally satisfying about biting into a tower of pork, juices and sauces running down face and fingers, with the occasional bite of cole slaw to refresh the taste buds before going in for more porcine perfection. I have always been a barbecue lover, but the 9th annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, which took over Madison Square Park this weekend, helped me find comrades-in-arms: other voracious eaters with no qualms about table manners or general propriety.

After exiting 23rd St. subway station, my two friends and I followed a trail of people wearing paper pig-ears to the smoky paradise that was the barbecue. Undeterred by the sticky, grey weather, we decided to divide and conquer. With 16 pitmasters featuring regional ‘cue like Tennessee-style whole hog and Alabaman smoked sausage, it was easy to be dazzled by the selection.
