The Sweetest Shop in New York: Doughnut Plant

At its convenient location just down 23rd St and at 7th Ave, Doughnut Plant is a great little place to stop by on your way to work to get your daily fix of yummy, fresh doughnuts.

Cooked that day so that they aren’t stale or dry (like most doughnuts you find around the city), these doughnuts are made with the highest quality of all natural ingredients: no artificial flavors, no preservatives, no eggs and no trans fats.  All glazes are made with seasonal fruit and fresh roasted nuts.

It can be easy to get a little overwhelmed when you first walk in: there are so many choices of doughnut that your head might spin, but the large selection ensures that there’s something for everyone.

My favorite had to be the Apple Cinnamon Yeast doughnut.  This square, sticky doughnut is sweet but not cloyingly so, and it smells just as good as it tastes. A close second is their seasonal pumpkin donut.  Glazed with a few pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top for decoration, this spicy treat tastes almost like a bite of pumpkin pie.

If you’re looking for something a little different, make sure you try their crème brulée doughnut.  This little doughnut ball, glazed in brown sugar and filled with a sweet, subtle cream, is like none you’ve ever tried. The crispy outer layer combined with the sweet and creamy inside filling makes the perfect indulgent dessert.

For all the chocoholics out there looking for that perfect chocolate treat, look no further.  The Blackout is your dessert of choice. This chocolate doughnut, with dark chocolate crumbs on top and melted gooey chocolaty goodness inside, is divine. If you’re looking for something a little subtler, but still chocolaty, try the Valrhona chocolate doughnut: a traditional doughnut covered in milk chocolate glaze.

Finally, if you just want a plain, simple doughnut and don’t feel like being so adventurous, try the vanilla glaze doughnut.  It’s just the perfect, simple, glazed doughnut that goes great with a cup of coffee on a rainy morning.

Only one word of caution: make sure you get there early or you’ll miss the doughnuts!  Doughnut Plant closes as soon as they run out, and you don’t want to miss your favorite flavor!
