After watching Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series on TV year after year, I couldn’t believe I waited this long to experience it firsthand. It’s not easy to commit to starting your day at 4 A.M., but seeing Jennifer Hudson perform live this past Friday was completely worth it.
The Grammy award-winning singer’s amicable personality really shined as she interacted with the crowd. You can’t help but feel a connection to her performance with her persistent eye contact with the fans and movement around the stage. During sound check, fans cheered “J-Hud” and applauded as she answered back with smiles, waves, and by blowing kisses.
Everyone sang along to music from her sophomore album, which was released this past March and has been certified gold. Jennifer performed songs such as, “I Got Me” and “I Remember Me”, while “Spotlight” from her debut album really had the crowd going. Although some artists struggle to deliver live performances, I was impressed by Jennifer’s undeniable vocal abilities in person.
Not only was Jennifer Hudson a great performer, but the Summer Concert Series is now one of my new favorite NYC activities. If you’re worried about the crowd and process, I assure you, from the time I arrived at 5:30 A.M. to the time the concert ended, which was 9 A.M., everything ran smoothly. Any of these concerts throughout the summer are absolutely free and better yet, it’s an outdoor event in New York City. Plus, I was really excited to see Sam Champion and Robin Roberts in person.
I suggest arriving at the location (72nd and 5th Ave.) between 5:30 – 6 A.M. Trust me, the line starts populating rather quickly, but you’ll have a better concert experience with GMA as opposed to paying for an overpriced ticket to an arena.
Don’t be afraid to set the alarm at dawn, because you can always catch up on sleep during the weekend!
