Weekend Forecast!!!

Nothing screams summer in New York more than music festivals, street food and biking. Although April may be a little premature to box up our coats and jackets for the season, satisfy your craving for outside New York with a few recommendations from the Inside…

Faile, two Brooklyn-based artists, have teamed up with long-time coordinator Bast to convert an abandoned store-front in the LES into a nostalgia-inducing video arcade. Visitors will literally be able to participate in the art, as the retrofitted machines are fully functional (psychedelic football, anyone?).  In Faile’s own words, you’ll be so “captivated by the carnivalesque” that you won’t even realize you’re in an exhibition.

WHEN: Fri, April 30 @ 7:30pm, open until May 27th

WHERE: 158 Allen St (between Stanton & Rivington)

HIP-HOP KARAOKE @ THE BROOKLYN BOWL Have a rap fantasy that extends beyond singing along to Youtube videos? Well here’s your chance to turn dreams to reality. This Friday, the Brooklyn Bowl—a venue Rolling Stone recently called one of the funnest places on earth—is holding a hip-hop karaoke contest. Pay tribute to greats long gone or show off your knowledge of irreverent Weezy freestyles. The venue provides the mic, beats, lyrics, stage, DJ and crowd– All you have to do is bring the flow. The event is 21+ with great drink specials all night!

WHEN: Fri, April 30th @ 9pm

WHERE: Brooklyn Bowl, 61 Wythe Ave Brooklyn

MADE IN THE 80′s COSTUME PARTY Remember those outfits you wish we’d all forget? Well, this Friday Union Hall in Brooklyn travels back in time to our favorite neon, spandex and big hair decade.  The theme is 80’s fashion horror and the costume contest provides the perfect excuse to re-visit those animal print leather pants.

WHEN: Fri, April 30 @ 11:30pm

WHERE: Union Hall, 702 Union St at Fifth Ave, Park Slope, Brooklyn

BIKE MONTH NYC INAUGURATION Kick off a month of all things cycling by heading to Brooklyn Bridge park (on your bike of course).  Consult the website for leaving times and locations from your neighborhood. Enjoy food and gear freebies, mingle with fellow bike riders, and check out the brand new park.

WHEN: Sat, May 1 @ 1-5pm

WHERE: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Main St at Plymouth St, Dumbo, Brooklyn

POSTSCRYPT ARTSFEST 2010 The legendary folk festival has morphed into a giant art-expo! In addition to goodtime tunes, there will be a massive art sale, an interactive environment art installation and something called the “catharsis tent” where you take paint and throw it.

WHEN: Sat,  May 1st @ 3—10pm

WHERE: Van Am Quad + College Walk, Columbia University

DERBY DAY AT UNION HALL While there are hopefully going to be a ton of Derby events happening around the city, head down to Union Hall for $5.00 mint juleps and a $100 prize for the best Derby hat. The races will be shown on the screens upstairs but everyone knows you’ll be there for the patio cook-out and corn-hole toss.

WHEN: Sat, May 1st @ 12pm

WHERE: Union Hall, 702 Union St at Fifth Ave, Park Slope, Brooklyn

FORD FIESTA CONCERT @ WEBSTER HALL Caitlin-Marie Miner and Monica Lo have invited Mike Del Rio, Sophie Dupin, and Charlie Tippie to perform at Webster Hall. The concert is FREE, and there will be an open bar and happy hour specials! 21+

ARGENTINE TANGO PARTY @ 92nd ST. Y All are welcome to honor the hottest, sexiest, most seductive form of dance, the Tango. Come with friends or lovers, and spend the night perfecting your moves to a number of valses and milongas. Recently dubbed an “intangible cultural heritage” (No kidding, check out UNESCO), Tango is over a century old and is a fast and complicated dance. But have no fear! There is a group lesson for the first hour of the party starting at 8pm. Come to learn or just have a good time, all ages welcome!

WHEN: Sat, May 1 @ 8pm— 2am

WHERE: 92nd St. Y, 1395 Lexington Ave

PRICE: $15

RED HOOK BALL FIELDS OPEN The Ball Fields is a warm weather, New York tradition that features delicious outdoor, South-American food trucks. The event began in 1974 when some makeshift vendors began selling food during the semi-pro soccer games, but the food quickly out-showed the games.  Pupusas, huaraches, arepas, aguas frescas, are all there to satisfy your Latin food craving, done cheaply and (arguably) better than anywhere else in the city. Keep your eye out for the Cerano family that has been there every summer since 1974.

WHEN: Every Saturday and Sunday Through October from 8am till sundown

WHERE: Clinton St & Bay St
Brooklyn, NY 11231
