America’s Most Emo President

400x300When I hear the name Andrew Jackson, I usually think of the glossy pages of history textbooks or never-ending documentaries narrated by some ancient historian.  However, in The Public‘s new musical, “Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson”, our seventh president has acquired a new reputation as America’s Most ‘emo’ President. Laughing it Up at Luca

Interior of Luca Lounge

Interior of Luca Lounge

New York City is one of the Meccas of comedy, but the protocol of never-ending lines and two drink minimums can deter some from appreciating the holy experience. Big name studio comedy shows are often free and the big comedy shows are certainly worth the time and money, but there is something to be said about the more intimate environment offered at the Thursday Night Comedy show at Luca Lounge. In the small and informal  setting, various comedians give the audience a little taste of their material before passing the baton. Read the complete post »

Tales of a Moth

TheMothClasses are winding down, exams are nearby, the summer is looming torturously close, and in the midst of all the chaos and havoc, it’s important to take a moment and just chill.

Determined to do just this, I headed to Alphabet City on a Tuesday night, my books and obligations forgotten back in Morningside Heights, to enjoy an evening with the best bards of Manhattan. The Moth, a kickass, not-for-profit founded in 1997 by poet George Dawes Green, is committed to bringing about a revolution in storytelling.

Event Showcase: Tales of a Bedwetter

9780061987137How often does one have the opportunity to listen to the confessionals of an Emmy Award-winning actress struggling with an uncontrollable bladder? As if we’d expect anything less from the ladylike charm of Sarah Silverman, some may be surprised to find her personal narrative depicted this time in print rather than moving picture.

This Tuesday, April 20th, Sarah will be gracing patrons of the Union Square Barnes & Noble with a reading from her first book, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. Read the complete post »

Hammin’ it Up: The WFC Takes on Shakespeare

2arts10I was waiting for Hamlet outside of the Starbucks in the World Financial Center with a caramel latte in one hand and a notebook in the other. He was late. There was a crowd gathering around the store; an influx of late shoppers, I assumed, though was quickly proven wrong.  Read the complete post »

Sex and the City Fashion on the Bowery

satc5Practically every woman who comes to Manhattan compares herself to Carrie Bradshaw at one point or another. This archetypal New Yorker has it all: fabulous friends, a great apartment, and, of course, an outstanding shoe collection.  And while most of us can’t afford to own dozens of Manolos or attend the most exclusive parties, a large portion of us never gives up on those dreams.

This! Is! Fitness!

PlankWhen I heard that I would be attending Warrior Fitness Boot Camp, I wasn’t sure whether to be excited or terrified. I guessed that this new fitness facility would be nothing like that, and yes, I guessed correctly.
