Think Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are stealing the spotlight this weekend? How about the Oscars?  INY thinks otherwise. This weekend, we’ll kick off the month in celebration of The American Gangster, The Alamo, and Soup, to name a few. If you must be traditional, we’ve even included those aforementioned Hollywood Heavy-Hitters, but of course celebrated in NYC’s unique style…

ARTS WEEK IN NYC
This year INY’s top pick for AW is the Fourth Fountain Art Fair. We still dig the Armory and Scope, but Fountain is where you go for fiercely independent work exhibited in an utterly unconventional location. You might not love everything, but you’ll appreciate modern art in a way that transcends the congested exhibits at MoMA. Hang out on the pier all day if you like—13 galleries and six independent projects will be on display. Events throughout the weekend include the “Pains of Being Pure at Heart”, headlining Friday’s opening reception at 9:30pm, and Artlog Live at the fountain with DJ Marky Ramone and more. All Ages

Guests this year include Dave Smith (playing 9pm Friday), whose use of classical harmony and counterpoint give his band an original and sophisticated sound. Also be sure not to miss the multi-talented and grammy nominated Adam Kolker, whose trio will be performing on Saturday at 8:30pm.

NORA HERTING PORTRAIT SITTING Posing for family portraits is an agonizing and awkward ritual that most of us don’t have particularly fond memories of. But Nora Herting has transformed this agony and awkwardness into performance art. Her new project, which is part of the Armory show celebration, explores the architectural space of the portrait studio, and transforms portraiture into social sculpture. She’ll be taking photographs of random bystanders, whom she’ll cast in “picture perfect” fictive families. If you’d like to be immortalized in one of them, get your upright shoulders, too-tight smile, and clasped hands ready.
