“I am dressed in an old Cavs sweater. You?” I say on the phone to renowned stand-up comedian Mike Lawrence, who replies on the other line: “I’m wearing a Wolverine t-shirt. This is like some kind of awful blind date.”
My mission for the night: follow Mike to each of his comedy sets across the city.

DBGB: Daniel Boulud’s Great Burgers, Delicious Bright Glorious Beers, Decadent Burgers (that are) Gastronomically Beautiful… there are so many possibilities. The acronym is actually a play on the name of the iconic Lower East Side club, CBGB. Apart from the name, however, DBGB’s only similarity with this hardcore punk and New Wave mecca of the 80s is its location in the Bowery. DB are the initials of Daniel Boulud, one of New York’s most prominent French chefs, and DBGB Kitchen and Bar is his most accessible outpost—one committed to providing the best of French cuisine in the form of the all-American burger.

In the Venn diagram of giddy fandom, a surprisingly large number of Lebowskiphiles and Shakespeare lovers overlap. In “Two Gentleman of Lebowski“, the Horse Trade Theater Group and MTheatrics have created an unparalleled production of the Coen brothers’ smash hit rewritten in Shakespearean dialect.
From its humble beginnings as a writing exercise, the play has achieved viral fame and cult Internet status—it has instantly become one of New York’s most fiercely beloved indie productions. Think of it as “Shakespeare with Balls,” something akin to being in on two jokes at once, fed through a schizophrenic time machine.

Having never been to an opera before, I decided to take advantage of the New York City Opera’s $12 student tickets for my first immersion into the world traditionally characterized by grandiose stage sets, glass-shattering voices, period-piece costuming, and the word “Figaro.”
I chose to see Madama Butterfly upon the sole basis of having heard the title before. And it’s no wonder that it sounded familiar—Madama Butterfly is the most frequently performed opera in all of North America. Written by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, it is largely considered to be one of the most important works in the standard operatic canon, along with Puccini’s other works including La Bohème, Tosca, and Turandot.

A few weekends back, I found myself afloat on a boat over the East River, and neither The Lonely Island nor T-Pain had anything to do with it.
The boat was actually a small white barge, moored directly beneath the majestic expanse of the Brooklyn Bridge. It has been called one of the most unique music venues in the world, as well as one of New York City’s best-kept secrets.

Reminiscent of San Francisco’s Mission District or Echo Park of LA, Gallery Bar combines great music, original artwork, and a packed house to create a lively night of Lower East Side shenanigans. Just beware of intruding shoulders as the packed house can easily breach its tipping point as you get to know your neighbor a little better than you would have liked.

The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago is, at its core, an elaborate guest list of some of the most imposing female figures in history. I was attracted to the permanent exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, in part, because of the nagging question of who I would invite to such a great feast.

Main Showroom at Comix
A little while ago, I headed to the Meatpacking District, ditching the snobby clubs and chichi French fries, and destined for Comix. One of the not-so-secret gems of comedy in New York City, Comix doesn’t disappoint, nor discomfort in the way that many stand-up shows leave you feeling depressed and sorry for the comedian’s self-deprecating humor. To my relief, the performance actually made me laugh.
