The Powerhouse Arena Spins for Colum McCann

great-worldDespite the paralyzing blizzard that was rapidly enveloping the streets of New York this weekend, I made the snowy journey to the Powerhouse Arena to see Colum McCann for a reading, signing, and discussion of his newest award-winning novel, Let the Great World Spin.

The trendy bookstore and self-proclaimed “laboratory for creative thought” stocks an array of eclectic and intriguing hipster titles. Serving as a gallery, boutique and event space, the 5,000 square foot venue with its 24-foot ceilings easily fit over a hundred people for McCann’s reading.

French-Mexican Fusion in Spanish Harlem: Itzocan Bistro

Photo from Flickr

Photo from Flickr

Fusion Cuisine has become the trademark of Manhattan dining, but nowadays a mixed culinary heritage alone won’t fill tables. Itzocan Bistro, Spanish Harlem’s newest French-Mexican digs, is a new approach to eclectic cooking that makes the pioneers of Nouvelle, Tex-Mex, and California fusion seem conservative.

The Vagina Saga Continues

It’s pretty hard to walk past an exhibit entitled “The Visible Vagina” and not enter the gallery.  Last week in Chelsea, the name beckoned me to the David Nolan Gallery where the art exhibit was on display. Featuring over forty prominent artists and an overflow of work that spills into the Francis M. Naumann Fine Art Gallery on the Upper West Side, my curiosity was more than abated.

In New York, models seem to be everywhere; on magazines, on billboards, or even on the subway. Cynthia MacAdams’s “Feminist Portaits”, together with Timothy Greenfield-Sander’s “Supermodels of the 70s and 80s”, depict the most famous supermodels of the past three decades, alongside everyday, laypeople—a perfect microcosm of our own New York.

February is Hot Chocolate Month at The City Bakery

Photo from the New York Post

Photo from the New York Post

Last week, I found myself in line for The City Bakery’s special of the day, Bourbon hot chocolate. The décor alone at this chocolate-themed restaurant is enough to make one’s mouth water, ranging from homemade marshmallows suspended from the ceiling to a phone booth-sized alcove lined with bars of dark brown decadence.

Seductive Cambodian Cuisine and Cocktails in the LES: Kampuchea and The Norry

The Norry

The Norry

Many trendy Asian restaurants in Manhattan are criticized for charging three times as much for a meal of the same caliber from Chinatown or Queens. Kampuchea, the spearhead of the haute Cambodian cuisine movement in the Lower East Side, defies this preconception. Its chef-owner Ratha Chaupoly  (former manager of Fleur de Sel) has created an intimate atmosphere and an inspiring menu that seduces your taste buds with creative pairings and bold ingredients.

Charlie Knows his Chicken

charlesFor those of us who like soul food, north of Central Park is the place to be. But to the patrons of places like “Rack and Soul” or “Miss Mammie’s Spoonbread,” I suggest venturing an extra 40 blocks uptown to the real stuff, namely Charles’ Southern Style Kitchen. Even though Rack and Soul and Charles’ Southern Style Kitchen are both owned by soul food enthusiast and chef Charles Gabriel, the latter is a significant step up. I’d go so far as to argue that there is no soul food restaurant in New York City that even compares to Charles’ Southern Style Kitchen.

Art for the “Week-end”: Alex Prager

The outside of 535 West 22nd Street didn’t look like much to me—another Chelsea art gallery, at best.  It was only upon entering the building that I could see all it had to offer.  The six story venue, accessible to the general public as well as prospective buyers, boasts ten connected galleries overflowing with various artists and exhibits.
