While for students, the ratio of alcohol to food expenditures has always been a top-heavy phenomenon, the current recession disclaimer attached to all consumer decisions has finally pushed our boundless budget for booze to its threshold. The “poor-and-starving college student” is now the “sober-starving” college student, and the expense of drinking has forced us to bolster our tolerance levels. Luckily, in my search for a decent deal on tap, I came across Amsterdam 106, where from 4 to 7pm happy hour enthusiasts not only drink from a huge selection of $3 pints, but also feast on a free order of house mussels, no strings attached.
While the deal isn’t overtly exploited and no mention is given on the sports bar’s website, it’s no coincidence that every Friday evening sports fanatics, Wall Street suits, and neighborhood families unite to munch on mussels. Request an extra side of bread to soak up the rich and buttery sauce and you’ve got dinner on the house.
If you value a good beer more than a free meal, the large selection on tap has something for everyone. If you prefer something light and smooth with a crispy finish, the Goose Island 312 was a great recommendation from the bar and the perfect accompaniment to seafood.
If you can’t make it for the Friday Happy Hour or their $8 lunch special everyday from 12-4, the full dinner menu offers all-day breakfast and dozens of specialty sandwiches and salads, along with unique highlights such as catfish tacos and lobster mac and cheese. The kitchen serves until 2am and is recommended for any day, time or meal.
